Consult with the school district. They may provide many of the items (texts, etc.) that you need, and some districts actually provide teachers to come to your home and teach/tutor students who are ill. Tell them the situation and ask for their help.

I am sorry to here that. The school he was attending should be able to help you obtain some material. The library’s are also a good resource.Good luck!

First, you can only ‘homeschool’ your child if you have a Bachelor’s Degree from a university or college (any B. will do, though). Second, call the School Superintendant’s office, and tell them that your son has cancer, and that you want to ‘homeschool’ him, and need their ‘help’ so that when he is ‘better’ he will be able to ‘go back to school’ with his ‘peers’ who were his peers last year when he left. They should provide you with all of the books, plus some tests … and they may even offer to do the ‘correction’ and give you ‘help’ so that you can ‘teach your child effectively.’ You will have to ‘buy’ the usual ’school supplies’ and may want to get some ‘teacher’s supplies’ (try any good office supply store, or look in the ‘directory’ under Schools, and Teachers for other ’supply stores’ …
I’ll pray for both you and your son … please be HARD on him … don’t ‘take it easy’ at all. I’ve had cancer myself, twice, and I know that it’s the HARD STUFF that makes it easier to get through this terrible disease not people ‘going easy on us’ because we are ’sick.’

theres always websites for learning. if you yahoo or google “grammar lesson,” or “math lessons” youll probably find quite a few. its the cheapest way too. also, the library provide lesson books. just dont write on them or youll get charge ;-)

I hope your son improves daily. I have not personally gone through that situation, but I recently had students who have had cancer and I have a sideline view of what the parents go through. Below are a few sites to get you started, BUT I would contact your school first. If your son will only be out of school for a little while, the school should supply a tutor so he can still be using the same curriculum as his classmates. If your son is in the hospital, the hospital has special teachers who tutor the child while there using materials/ideas submitted by the child’s teacher. But please contact your son’s school first and find out what their policy is for your situation. Good Luck and prayers are with your family.

Added info: I agree with Kris L. - however I know parents who have never gone to college and are homeschooling so check your state’s requirement.

Sorry to hear that your son is sick.

Here are some sites to check out for homeschooling materials.

To find out what you need to do legally in your state, go to look on the left side of the screen for the words “In your state” and click on them.

BTW, I’ll be praying for your son.

Kris L is wrong. The laws in many states don’t even require the parent to have a diploma. In my state a parent needs to have 45 college credits or take a homeschool qualifying course (available on-line or in an all day seminar format). Go to that hslda site for accurate info on your state.

I really think home schooling is the wrong way to go. If anything put them in a private school. There are a lot of social aspects that children learn in school that will cause them to suffer later on. From an educational point of view they will have good grades and be advanced. But what good is that if they have no ability to interact with their peers?

My prayers are with you….. I can relate as my daughter has Lukemia.
The things you need to homeschool can be found just about anywhere…( thrift store are good to troll) and of course the basics(pen, paper, pencil).

The State you live in will dictate the ‘legalities’ of homeschool…. Alabama requires an Umbrella School (these schools cost $$, send you the work needed, hold onto test scores and such), Florida requires simply notifying the SchoolBoard of your intent, 180 days of attendance, yearly evaluation.
Simply type the name of your state in the google line followed by ‘homeschool laws’, you can also go to ( but they give basic overview for each state).
His age and grade level will pretty much dictate his learning, but make sure that you take his learning STYLE into consideration and don’t limit the learning to the house, field trips count as a school day, also teach to his interests ( mine wants to be a Palentologist when she grows up so we are heavy on Science and Math and History).

Homeschool.com is a great site and can answer many questions. From one mom to another, I know it’s hard but we need to keep going if only to keep them going. My daughter knows she is sick, but she doesn’t need to know that she may never grow up to actually achieve her dream and as much as it hurts I will NEVER let her stop and feel sorry for herself and I am Thankful for every day that we are given.
As far as she is concerned, she’s sick but life goes on and so does learning. If at all possible she does what other children her age are doing and if she can’t we find alternatives.

I’m so sorry to hear about your son. I do pray everything turns out well for him.

If you’re interested in keeping him with the public school, you might talk to them about home-bound. In this type of program, the school sends a teacher to him with his assignments on a weekly or twice weekly basis. He does the work on his own in between visits. When he’s well enough to return to school, he goes right back in.

If you truly want to leave the public school system behind (both literally and figuratively), find a homeschool support group or co-op in your area. You will have many, many questions and Y!A isn’t really a good place to get *accurate* information (like the person who said you *have* to have a Bachelor’s degree - not in my state, you don’t), although it is a good place to be verbally accosted for your choice. Because the laws vary from state to state, a group in your area will have the best information and be happy to answer whatever questions you have. Do not go to the school district as they are often unfamiliar with the state homeschool laws and may give you misinformation.

To find a group in your area (and an overview of your state’s laws) go to the HSLDA website ( ) and click on the US map on the right side of the page, then choose your state. Two of the items will be “Laws” and “Organizations”. They may not have an org. in your area, but your state organization should have a more comprehensive list (HSLDA will have links to the state org). You could also search for a Yahoo! Group. Type the search “(your city/town) homeschool”.

Best wishes to you and your son, whatever road you choose.

If your son is on any disability or state aide he might qualify for home tutoring I would check into that. But here is some more info that might help you.First check with your local school to see if they will help some do some dont. Or at least if they can tell you the laws for your state. Next I would check into some of the publicly funded virtual schools online and see if you are luck enough to be in 1 of the states that authorize that. If not you can still by the curriculum and have their help it will just cost instead of being free….>….

When a child is unable to attend school due to medical reasons the school will usually set up a home tutor program. Kids do their school work online (or have a tutor come out). This is all paid for by the school - not the parent.

Best of luck to you and your son!
