Once a Student starts a year in public school, can they legally seek request to be home schooled?

Yes, I know many people who have done so. But check with you states education board first to make sure. And send a letter of “intent” to home-school to them. (Unless you are in Texas, I believe they always require the letter)

I haven’t yet heard of a place that would prevent parents from pulling their kids out mid-year. You’d need to make sure by finding out about the laws where your aunt lives.

Most generally, it is not illegal to remove a child from PS or private schools at any time, as long as you follow the proper procedures. Now, the proper procedures may not be what the school tells you.
So, to make sure your aunt understands her rights and her responsibilites, and to make sure she is not being made to do things she does not have to do, have her check out
they have tons of information about homeschooling laws, including procedures for removing a child from a public school.
Where I live, all you have to do is submit a short letter stating the child will be receiving their education elsewhere and that education includes reading, writing, math and good citizenship (how vague is that??)

PS have her check the website first, in some states, the last place you want to go is the school board. I don’t know where you are, so I have no idea if that is accurate for you or not. hslda (home school legal defense association) will have the correct info for your state.

Most homeschooling organizations allow you to start at any time during the year. I would recommend Penn Foster or the American School of Correspondence for the 11th grader. These are both accredited programs.
Or, if your state allows it, you can actually get curriculum from the high school to home school the student.
Legally, they cannot stop you, even if it is in the middle of the school year.
And don’t let people tell you that homeschoolers are socially retarded. It simply isn’t true. I was homeschooled from 11th grade onward, and I became more social because of it. I had been shy, but I became much more outgoing.
Also, the September 2006 Reader’s Digest cited a Columbia U. study. Columbia U. found that homeschoolers scored higher on college entrance exams.
