Home school?

Miss Pepper asked:

What are the first steps to make when you want to get homeschooled and your parents approve of it?

I live in Australia and went to school with children who had previously been home schooled, here it is a matter of approaching your local education autority who may wish you to have an age appropriate cirriculm plan.
After you are approved it becomes a matter of filing monthly reports to ensure the standards of the local area are being met.

I dont recommend home schooling, unless being ridiculed by other kids. Now if u wanna be lazy and dont want 2 get up in the morning, then what r u gonna do when u get older and in the real world? Think about it b4 u do the homeschooling thing

Wow, Mass Appeal. That was a bit premature and harsh, barring you know this person in real life. I am a homeschooling Mum in the states and, obviously an advocate. Keep in mind, MOST jobs when one gets older are NOT sit behind the desk from the ***** of dawn til late afternoon. MANY (and higher-paying) jobs are hands-on and out in the field.

There are also MANY reasons OTHER than being ridiculed for HS’ing. Long term illness, desire to teach religion, advancement, etc. are just a SMALL few of the reasons to HS. There are many other reasons, and quite frankly, I worry about some of the schools being lazy, as opposed to the children.

On to the OQ:

The first step will be to visit the Home School Legal Defense (this is predominantly a stateside state, but it does have some good articles for overseas). This gives info from how to begin, to all of the steps you need to legally HS in your home state. If you cannot find the answers there, you’ll need to contact the board of education for your county, or speak with the head mistress/master of your school. Some areas do not require ANY paperwork or notification to home school. If you could give your location, unless I am missing it in your profile (country or state- nothing too personal), I may be able to assist you a bit more.

Remember, your parents are the ones that will need to do the paperwork and the footwork to bring you home for schooling!

1st step: Visit to find out about regulations where you live. Pay specific attention to any registration or notification you might need to do.

2nd step: See if you can find a homeschool support group in your area to help explain those regulations better, to get a better feel for how homeschooling works under those regulations, etc.

3rd step: Work out a program plan. This will involve deciding what you need to study (if you do for your laws or just to be able to get your diploma), what you want to study, what you will use as textbooks, etc.

4th step: Get all the stuff you need together and get started. Some sort of schedule would be good, too!

I found this really good website that has TONS of information about homeschooling and how to get started. They’re also having an essay contest, in which the top two essayists will each win a Nintendo Wii!! The essay must be 500-1,000 words, and the question to be answered is: How is your family putting “Christ” into Christmas this year? The contest ends December 31st, 2006.

Check it out at

You have to find a home schooling program. I used to be home schooled and I recommend . On the site go down to the bottom where It says “attend an event.” It will give you all the states where the program is available.Your parents are recommended to go to an event to learn about the program. But It’s not required. You could also go to “become a student” on the site and that will give you information about the school.
Hope that helps :)
