Are there regulations for home schooling?

smoofus70 asked:

Is there a minimum amount of hours that need to be taught at a home school? Minimum amount of classes, subjects, etc?

I’m just curious since I don’t know anything about home schooling. I went to private schools when I was a child.
This question is purely out of curiousity. I don’t have any kids to home school at this point.

This varies widely from state to state in the US. The states set their own requirements for homeschooling, which range from very non-restrictive (my state just requires a ‘comparable education’) to registering as a private school, to moderate or strict invasive paperwork and testing requirements.

Typically you have to do 4 hrs a day and 180 days for the school year. Your local board of ed. will have their requirements as each state and county are different

Depends on your state laws; each one is different. Check with HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Association). But always read your state law code for yourself because if you are not in compliance, you can’t blame someone’s misinformation.

YES!!!!

By all means check out your state’s Dept of Education for guidelines, as each state differs. And also go to HSLDA website to see other legal aspects. There are laws for each state concerning homeschooling! My state is the most liberal in the union, we don’t have to bother to register or send in info, but it’s a good idea to keep some kind of info on what is being taught..like a portfolio…but the state cannot make us produce it unless there is absolutely strong probable cause. They cannot force us to do anything without taking us all the way to the supreme court (and most of the homeschoolers I know would go all the way there to defend their privacy and rights). We are to do 1000 hours a year, in our own time frame, whenever we choose, as long as it’s 1000 hours in core subjects (reading/writing/etc)…with 600 in core and 400 in other areas… We have full discretion as to where and when we teach, with what, etc…

I’m homeschooled. You have to have 4 hours a day. And all the subjects you would have in a regular school. Except PE and Health.

You need to check out the department of education in your area to find out what they say you need to do but you will find that it is 4 hours a day for 180 days a year. As for the subjects it depends what books you use.

My sisters and brothers as well as myself are home schooled and with the books we use there are 9 subjects for primary school and 9 to 11 for high school. It all depends what books you use or how you go about doing it.

Actually, it depends on the state. I just checked NY for someone, and they are REALLY strict. But in CA, where I live, there are no requirements in regards to attendance or curriculum. Just for kicks, go to and browse through the states. Besides those requirements it depends on the standards the parent sets.
